Paul Brant
Paul Brant
Labour spokesperson for Finance and Europe

I am Paul Brant, Councillor for Riverside Ward and spokesperson for Finance and Europe.

The Council will face unprecedented challenges over the next few years seeking to bridge the £120million financial black hole in the Council's finances left by the Liberal Democrats. This is almost one quarter of the money the Council controls.

The City will also have to adjust to no longer being an 'Objective One' European funding area whilst maximising the jobs and investment generated from our business and people.

Protecting front line services serving our communities will be our priority during these difficult years to come. I am committed to ensuring that we do not return to the high unemployment of the Tory years, and capitalising on our assets, such as the wonderful educational, cultural and visitor institutions in the City to foster growth and regeneration of our communities.

I will work hard to draw private investment into the City and maximise Government and European grants to the City and to minimise levels of Council Tax in the City. Over the next few years we must build a thriving and environmentally sustainable City which combines economic growth with environmental sustainability tackling climate change.

Labour’s Spokesperson for ‘Enterprise and Tourism’ and ‘Culture, Media and Sport’

I am Councillor Steve Rotheram and am Labour’s Spokesperson for ‘Enterprise and Tourism’ and ‘Culture, Media and Sport’.

Last year I had the unbelievable privilege to serve as the Lord Mayor of Liverpool during our Capital of Culture celebrations. This was an incredible honour, and it gave me the opportunity to see every aspect of the Cultural heritage of our wonderful City, first hand.

A Labour led Liverpool City Council will take the lead in ensuring it provides the platform for entrepreneurialism and enterprise. It will work with the widest range of cultural institutions, and other stakeholder groups and individuals, to build on our historical successes; our musical heritage as the World Capital of Pop, our World class architecture, our football and other sporting prowess and our unrivalled cultural heritage, to attract visitors and investment into the City by capitalising on Liverpool’s reputation for the warmth and friendliness of its welcome and our unique cultural offer. Our ambition is to make Liverpool a true international destination of choice.

Jane Corbett
Jane Corbett
Labour chair of the Education and Skills Select Committee

I’m Jane Corbett, councillor for Everton and Labour chair of the Education and Skills Select Committee.

My ward of Everton has the highest rates of worklessness in the city, the worst death rates, and the lowest income levels. 89% of the Everton ward is in the UKs top 1% most disadvantaged communities. I want to fight to redress to tackle the causes of this. We cannot continue to have such a divided city, with great affluence side by side with such desperate poverty.

Under the Lib Dems, Liverpool has become the most divided authority in the whole of England, between the haves and the have nots.

But I want to see the talents and creativities of my community recognised and allowed to flourish and benefit the whole of the city. As part of a Labour council, fighting social injustice and tackling inequality will be my number one priority.

Beatrice Fraenkel
Beatrice Fraenkel
Liverpool Labour’s Ethics and Governance Spokesperson

I’m Beatrice Fraenkel, Councillor for Kirkdale, and Liverpool Labour’s Ethics and Governance Spokesperson.

We know the damage that sleaze and poor behavior by some Councillors have had on the workings of our Council, and what damage this has done to us as a City. We know that voters have been put off voting, which is dangerous for democracy, and we know that the image of our City has suffered, which is bad for all of us.

I will ensure a Liverpool Labour administration demands and upholds the highest standard of behavior right across the council. This includes all elected members, everyone working for the council, and everyone connected to us. We need to make sure the electorate can have trust in us all, and ensure the reputation of our City is second to none.

We will adopt the three ‘R’s of Responsibility, Respect and Reputation in all we do and in all our service delivery and personal behaviors, and build it into the culture of the City Council. It will be our Golden Thread that runs through all we say and do.

Roz Gladden
Roz Gladden
Chair of the Health, Care and Safeguarding Select Committee

My name is Roz Gladden and I am a Councillor for Clubmoor ward. I am Chair of the Health, Care and Safeguarding Select Committee which scrutinises the policies of Social Services, the PCT and the safeguarding of adults and children at risk.

My vision for Liverpool is to see our citizens access the best services to help them to live happy, healthy, independent lives.

To do this we must ensure that both the PCT and the City Council have good quality, accessible health care and care packages which will enable our service users and family care-givers to live longer within their own home and community before needing critical, long term residential care.

I also want to enable older people to live healthier lives by ensuring there are excellent quality services available within the community which they can access easily.

Joe Hanson
Joe Hanson
Labour Group Spokesperson for Corporate Services

I’m Joe Hanson, Councillor for Kirkdale Ward and Labour Group Spokesperson for Corporate Services.

My priority is to deliver services fit for the 21st century, services that not only deliver for the residents of Liverpool but services that treat our employees with care and fairness. We must also empower ours employees to deliver those services to our residents.

We will to build upon the working relationship with Liverpool Direct and our other partners. And we will demonstrate that working in partnership can bring benefits to the City of Liverpool and can deliver world class service to the residents of Liverpool.

We need to generate job opportunities within the city, and make sure that these opportunities are available to local people.

Malcolm Kennedy
Malcolm Kennedy
Labour spokesperson for Assets and Development

I’m Malcolm Kennedy, Councillor for Kirkdale Ward and Labour spokesperson for Assets and Development.

Thanks to a record level of investment since 1997, the Labour Government has kick started a revival in Liverpool’s development. However, so much remains to be done to bring the benefits of that regeneration to the districts and neighbourhoods of Liverpool, particularly in the north end of the city.

The City Centre has benefited from private sector investment. But the fact remains: drive just 5 minutes out of the city centre, in any direction, and you will hit the most extreme poverty anywhere in the UK. How have the Liberal Democrats allowed this to happen?

My priority is to deliver the renewal of the city’s physical assets which have been ignored by the current administration. Labour will improve the management and use of all the council's land and property assets, to aid the areas of the city ignored by the Liberal Democrats. We will work with the private, public and Third Sector to develop, implement and manage regeneration across the city. We will work closely with Merseytravel to ensure that transport strategies and policies for the city deliver the best possible transport links for the entire city and that transport delivers our social inclusion objectives.

Tim Moore
Tim Moore
Labour Group Environment Spokesperson

I’m Tim Moore, Councillor for Princes Park, and Labour Group Environment Spokesperson.

My priority is a cleaner, greener, Liverpool that leads on tackling climate change, supports the Green Economy, and puts frontline services first.

Residents demand and deserve top quality environmental services, on their doorsteps, on our streets, and in our neighbourhoods. Labour will deliver a weekly Bin Service, increase recycling opportunities and performance, and deliver cleaner streets – for local residents and visitors alike.

I also believe in being ambitious, effective and fair in our fight against climate change. We must promote greener ways to live, work, and travel, support our historic parks and open spaces, and invest in green jobs and skills to develop Liverpool’s future.

We all have a role to play in delivering a cleaner, greener Liverpool. Under Labour, the Council will lead from the front – whilst supporting our partners and our people, to play their part too.

Steve Munby
Steve Munby
Labour Group Spokesperson for Safer Stronger Communities

I’m Steve Munby, Councillor for Riverside and Labour Group Spokesperson for Safer Stronger Communities.

I want to see no part of our city left behind. Under the Liberal Democrats, millions has been spent on empty flats in the city centre while other parts of Liverpool have been left to rot. My first priority will be to sort out those areas – places like the Boot Estate, Easby, Dovecot and Stonebridge Cross.

I want to see more homes for the 23,000 people on the housing waiting list, a crack down on the problems caused by private landlords and a housing service fit for all our residents.

I will campaign for youth workers on the street at weekends, talking to the young people hanging around with nothing to do and nowhere to go. We need to fill our youth clubs, community centres and schools at weekends, evenings and holidays with activities to change that, with the council working with the police at a neighbourhood level to challenge anti-social behaviour so we can enjoy peace and quiet in our homes and feel safe on the streets.

Council services need to be geared to residents, where people you know work with you to make the area you live in clean, safe and green.

Wendy Simon
Wendy Simon
Labour Group Spokesperson for Health Care and Safeguarding

I'm Wendy Simon, Councillor for Kensington and Fairfied, and Labour Group Spokesperson for Health Care and Safeguarding.

My priority for the residents of Liverpool is that they receive the highest quality of the health and social care services that are personal to them, are of the highest standard and are effective in their delivery.

Residents are clear that they want an efficient and responsive assessment of their needs and a package of support, treatment or care that commences within a reasonable timescale.

They also demand well trained and specialist staff who can provide a consistency of care and are both reliable and flexible in their approach.

A focus on preventative services both in Health and Social Care is also important and a multi agency approach both within the council and with partners needs to be strengthened and further developed.

Health and Social Care services are a major challenge for us with an ever increasing ageing population, a greater focus on Child Protection and an ever increasing demand for more personalised health and social care packages. We need to rise to this challenge and ensure the residents of Liverpool have world class health and social care services that meet their needs provide value for money and strive to continually improve the health, daily living and emotional wellbeing of all.

Nick Small
Nick Small
Labour Group Spokesperson for Education, Skills and Employment

I’m Nick Small, councillor for Central Ward in Liverpool city centre and Kensington fields. I'm the Labour Group Spokesperson for Education, Skills and Employment.

I also sit on the Liverpool First Children’s Trust Board and the Court of the University of Liverpool, and I’m Chair of the City & North Economic Development & Enterprise Group.

Education needs to be central to everything we do. Under the Labour government, educational standards have rocketed: GCSE and A Level results are better than ever, class sizes are falling, and every single school in Liverpool has been rebuilt or refurbished.

But we always need to do more, and we need to remember that education doesn’t finish when you leave school – it can continue right through your life. So my priorities for Liverpool are improved educational attainment for all our children and young people, more lifelong learning opportunities, better skills training, more apprenticeships and bringing more good jobs to the city to allow more people to move off benefits and into work.

I want the people of Liverpool, no matter what their age, to be given the opportunity to learn new skills and to access education, regardless of their wealth or background.
