Meet Joe

I'm Joe Anderson, leader of Liverpool Labour, and Leader of Liverpool City Council. I am fiercely proud of the city of Liverpool and the people who work and live in it. I want what is best for our city, and I want to see Liverpool thrive as the international city it deserves to be.

But Liverpool faces tough times. The Lib Dem / Tory coalition government have hit Liverpool with deeper cuts than any other city in the country. Liverpool City Council has been hit with £141million of cuts to its annual budget. This will lead to fewer jobs at the council. It means we won’t be able to deliver the same level of services that we do now. And it means there are some incredibly painful decisions which need to be made.

At the same time, the Lib Dem / Tory government has cut £400million from Liverpool’s 26 school rebuilding projects. They have taken away £120million which was needed for new houses, despite their former leader in Liverpool admitting that twelve years of a Lib Dem council had turned parts of the city into a ‘war zone’; and they have broken promises made to people across the city.

I am angry at the way the Government have treated Liverpool. David Cameron and Nick Clegg tell us that ‘we’re all in this together’, when it seems that they’ve left Liverpool in it more than anywhere else.

I want to do what I can to protect the most vulnerable people from the worst of the Government’s cuts. I also want to campaign and fight back against the Coalition’s cuts.

I am proud to lead the City of Liverpool, and am proud to lead the Labour Party in Liverpool. I want people from across the city to join with us in fighting to move Liverpool forwards.
